SISTER CITY SINCE 1992: PSKOV (Pskov Oblast), RUSSIA
The Roanoke Pskov &: Oblast' Sister City Organization for over a decade has been involved in numerous humanitarian, educational and medical initiatives. Established in October of 1992, the Roanoke side of the Sister city partnership has furnished medical supplies and equipment for hospitals, orphanages and hospice in Pskov. addition, we have supplied such items as clothing and shoes, books, school supplies, washing machines, refrigerator, televisions and the like to Pskov area orphanages and have assisted School #3 in acquiring a new roof.
Under our leadership an agreement between Ferrum College and the Pskov Pedagogical Institute was established in 1993. To date numerous Russian students have received full scholarships for a semester of study at Ferrum College, while Ferrum students have worked, studied and benefited from internships in Pskov.
Roanoke and Pskov doctors and nurses have exchanged visits and have spent time becoming acquainted with the medical facilities and practices of each other's cities.
In 2002, the Roanoke group, working with the clergy and women parishioners of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and teachers of the adjacent school #5, made arrangements to provide daily hot meals for 25 children. This number has now been increased to thirty children and is a highly successful endeavor.
During the years of our partnership groups from Roanoke have visited Pskov, and the Roanoke side has been delighted to receive visitors from Pskov to the Star City.
